  • Updated on Wednesday 15th of April 2026

Module Overview

The hypertensive disorders of pregnancy represent the most significant complication of pregnancy affecting approximately 5% of all pregnancies and 11% of all first pregnancies . They continue to be a major cause of maternal, fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Between 40 000– 70 000 maternal deaths annually worldwide are due to severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.

The majority of these deaths occur in the developing world due to lack of technological and therapeutic intervention.
