Generally, there 5 types of questions in Writing Task 2. These are as follows:-

1.  Opinion questions

You will be presented with a statement and then asked to give your opinion on the subject matter therein. This may take any of the following forms;

  • To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  • Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
  • What is your opinion?

2. Discussion questions

Discussion questions, as the name suggests, expect you to discuss a certain subject in detail. Unlike opinion questions, you are expected to analyze both viewpoints on the subject. Such questions take the following forms:-

  • Discuss both views/sides.
  • Discuss both views/sides and state/give your opinion.

3. Problem solving

These questions ask you to discuss the causes and solutions or causes and effects of a problem or issue. Before you start writing, it's best to think of the causes and solutions or effects and select the two best points for each.

4. Two – part questions

These questions have a question statement followed by two or other three questions. The questions have a structure similar to Problem-solving questions.

5. Advantage/Disadvantage questions

For these types of questions, they normally give you a statement and ask you to comment on the advantages and disadvantages of that statement.

There are 3 different subtypes of advantages and disadvantages questions and each requires a different approach. The subtypes are as follows:-

1. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages.

2. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

3. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your own opinion.
